In particular, please note the following:
No Personal Attacks: Inevitably, discussions arise in which opinions are sharply divided and in which people feel particularly passionate. Debate is encouraged here. However, we limit debate to discussion or disagreement over the ideas presented. Direct attacks on other members (also known as ad hominem attacks) are strictly forbidden. For example, it would be appropriate to say that “your information that the Three Little Pigs were actually members of the Mafia threatening the wolf's family is strictly tabloid rubbish.” However, it would not be appropriate to say “you are an idiot if you believe the tabloid rubbish about the pigs' Mafia involvement.” The first example is a debate over the information, while the second example shows a personal attack on the other poster.
Violators of our rule prohibiting personal attacks will receive a warning and may find their message removed from the forum. Repeat violators will have their privileges revoked.
Profanity: Keep in mind that our forum is family-friendly. We ask that all profanity be avoided or “masked”. For example, sh!t, fnck, etc. If you use unmasked profanity, your message may be edited by a staff member.
Political and Ideological Discussions: In this modern era of polarized and divisive politics and extreme ideologies, we have decided that TheLitForum.com would be better served by focusing on the literary and related topics for which it was created. Consequently, topics of a current political nature, or that promote or attack a particular ideology, are no longer permitted on the forum. There are plenty of other places on the web to discuss politics and push ideological points of view. From now on, such posts will be removed.
Note, however, that the following are still permitted:
We realize that there may be significant grey areas in relation to what is or isn't political or ideological in nature, and that topics which of themselves are not political may still have political aspects (eg. when it comes to government policy related to them), so whether a post is acceptable or not will be at the discretion of staff.
Generally, we will give warnings before locking a participant off the board, but the management reserves the right to decide when “enough is enough.” Users who repeatedly break our rules and have been warned by staff about their rule-breaking will be put on post moderation, where their posts will not appear in public until approved by a member of staff.
Users who continue to break the rules while on post moderation will be put on a two-week posting ban. Further rule-breaking will earn a one-month posting ban, followed by a permanent ban if behavior is still not changed.
Users who are subject to post moderation who use a different account to get around the post moderation will be put on a one-month posting ban for a first offense. A second offense will result in an additional month added to the initial posting ban. A third offense will earn a permanent ban, and any new accounts created by the user following that will also be permanently banned.
